If you thought all a best man had to do during weddings is to ensure his best friend has a jolly good time at the bachelor’s party… well, you’re not wrong, but you’re not entirely right either. Along with preparing a speech that wedding attendees expect to be laden with PG-13 laughs and manly gushing, a best man is also expected to be the all-around go-to guy during wedding preparations, during the actual wedding, and of course, during the wedding party.
Rounding up all the groomsmen in order to (1) get you all fitted for suits, (2) come to a consensus about the bachelor’s party and get them to equally shell out for the expenses, (3) possibly delegate some tasks to them relating to these concerns and other things—the best man shouldn’t be expected to go at it alone, after all.
Attending the wedding rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. It might sound simple, but the best man’s world doesn’t stop just because this is happening. He must essentially put his own life on hold in order to make time for these pre-wedding events.
Playing attendant to the groom before the ceremony, helping him dress, encouraging him if the groom is feeling jittery—all while coordinating with other organizers to make sure preparations at the wedding and/or reception venues are going smoothly.
Standing firm with the groom at the altar. Keeping the bride’s ring safe until the groom asks for it, escorting the maid of honor at various points during the ceremony, and possibly signing the marriage license afterwards as one of the witnesses.
Helping to oversee that the guests’ needs are taken care of. Dancing with the bride and the bride’s maid of honor during the party proper. And commencing the merry well-wishing by giving the all-important best man’s speech.
Sending the newlyweds off in a car (that the best man decorated) towards their honeymoon (which the best man helped plan).
After all that, seeing the guests off with a thank you and a smile also counts as a duty, which is why it is advised that the best man not partake too much of the alcohol. He’s expected to be the last man standing when the day is finally over.
