Have you ever thought why men get down on one knee when asking his girlfriend her hand in marriage?  Well, we have some fun facts for you today!  If you were to ask your grandpa on how he proposed to your grandmother he might tell you that he didn’t get down on one knee, instead, it was an arranged marriage by their parents, because that is how it was used to be back then.  Marriage is some kind of business agreement.  They need to tie up to sustain the power and to save from bankruptcy.

The tradition behind the one-knee proposal will lead us back to medieval times in the.  Getting down on one knee in front of your lady or the king means respect, loyalty, and obedience.  If you are watching some medievally themed series like Game of Thrones, for example, the scene where Tyrion got down on one knee to Dany when he chose her to become the hand of the queen is a great example of pledging his respect, loyalty, and obedience.  Same goes for love.

In Roman time engagement rings are given to women as a sign of future marriage.  And back then the only acceptable ring of engagement is a diamond ring.  This tradition started back in 1800 when a mining company discovered diamonds in Africa and they set up a jewelry store named De Beers.  De Beers launched an advertisement in America in the 1930s called Diamonds are Forever.  The message of the ad was that the stones are the only way to marriage.
